James Jackson


1909 - c.1976

Footballer. Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne (England) into a Scottish family, Jackson's father was a professional footballer and his cousin was the notable Australian cricketer Archie Jackson (1909-33). He played for Queen's Park (1918-19) and Motherwell (1919-23) before joining Aberdeen for the record fee of £2000 in 1923. He read divinity at the University of Aberdeen, continuing his studies when he joined Liverpool in 1925. He rose to become their captain in 1928 but, having made 224 appearances, he left the club in 1933 to receive ordination as a minister in the Presbyterian church.
