An Irish monk and missionary. Thought to have been of noble birth, he was raised by St. Comgall at Bangor Abbey in Northern Ireland. He came to Scotland and founded a religious community in what is now Paisley, becoming the town's patron saint. His shrine in Paisley Abbey became a centre of pilgrimage. Opened in 1931, St Mirin's Cathedral is now the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paisley and a statue of the saint was erected opposite in 2007. The island of Inchmurrin in Loch Lomond is also named after him. Today, St. Mirren is perhaps most notably associated with St. Mirren Football Club, founded in Paisley in 1877.
His feast day is the 15th September.
