A. Stewart Cruikshank


c.1875 - 1947

Theatre impresario. Born in Edinburgh, Cruikshank was the son of a building contractor who had constructed the King's Theatre in 1905-06, amongst a number of other commercial, public and residential buildings in the city. When the syndicate who had commissioned the theatre faced financial difficulties, Cruikshank was became a Director. When the theatre was acquired by Howard & Wyndham in 1928, Cruikshank was appointed its manager. He rose to become Managing Director of the theatre-owning chain and was described as "the most respected figure in British theatre business".

Cruikshank died after having been hit by a motorcycle near his home in the Murrayfield district of Edinburgh.
