Entrepreneur. Born in Alloa (Clackmannanshire), Mitchell grew wealthy as a founder of the Alloa Coal Company and went on to invest in the Leith-based shipping company Ben Line.
His grandsons include Lord Provost of Edinburgh Sir Mitchell Mitchell-Thomson (1846 - 1918), the noted classical scholar Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851 - 1939), the British civil servant in India John Ontario Miller (1857 - 1843) and the founder of the Luscar Coal Company Colonel Alexander Mitchell (1871 - 1934).
