Mountain guide and professional climber. Born in Sconser, the son of a crofter, Mackenzie was climbing hills from an early age, known to have climbed Sgurr nan Gillean at the age of ten. He was responsible for the first recorded ascents of several of the Cuillin peaks, including Sgurr Mhic Choinnich (Mackenzie's Peak) in 1887, which was named in his honour. He was the first Scot to work as a professional mountain guide, using his knowledge of the Cuillin to lead many gentlemen climbers over a career which extended for more than 50 years. He explored new routes with his great friend Norman Collie (1859 - 1942).
