Lord (Thomas) Murray Elder


(Baron Elder of Kirkcaldy)

1950 -

Politician. Born in Kirkcaldy, Elder was educated at Kirkcaldy High School, where his close friendship with future Prime Minister Gordon Brown (b.1951) began. Elder went on to read Economic History at the University of Edinburgh. He began his career with the Bank of England in 1972. Elder served as General Secretary of the Labour Party in Scotland (1988-92) and then as Chief of Staff to John Smith (1938-84), the Labour Leader. Successively, he became Advisor to Tony Blair (b.1953) and Donald Dewar (1937 - 2000), helping the latter prepare for Scottish Devolution. He was raised to the Peerage as Baron Elder of Kirkcaldy in 1999 and was appointed Chancellor of Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education in Dundee in 2003.
