Robert Balmanno


c.1732 - 1820

Merchant, farmer and Burgess of Aberdeen. Balmanno was born into a Quaker family, and is noted for purchasing land in the southwest of the city, known as the Foul Moors, from the Rubislaw Estate in 1772. These had originally been part of Aberdeen's Freedom Lands. He drained and improved the land, planting strawberries which were said to be the best in Scotland and exported to be sold in Covent Garden in London. In 1773, he build Friendville as his home and gave his name to the district of Mannofield. Balmanno lies buried in the churchyard of the Kirk of St. Nicholas Uniting.
