Henry Sinclair

(Henry St. Clair)

c.1345 - c.1400

First Scottish Earl of Orkney and Trans-Atlantic Explorer. Associated with Roslin in Midlothian, Sinclair bought his title as Earl of Orkney from the Norwegian King. He is most famous for his voyage with Antonio Zeno, a sailor of Venetian decent, from Orkney to Greenland. It is possible that he went on to discover North America, ahead of Christopher Columbus, landing in what is now Nova Scotia.
