George Coats


(Lord Glentanar)

1849 - 1918

Textile manufacturer. Born in Paisley, the son of thread-maker Thomas Coats (1809-83), he joined the business begun by his father and uncle, working alongside his brother and cousin. He rented the Glen Tanar Estate in Aberdeenshire from 1901 and succeeded in purchasing it four years later. A man of great wealth, he also had an estate near Ayr and a home off Berkeley Square in London. He was a friend of Sir Harry Lauder (1870 - 1950). Coats was raised to the peerage as Lord Glentanar in 1916.
