Criminologist and sociologist. Born in Dundee, Garland was educated at the Harris Academy and the University of Edinburgh. Between 1979 and 1997, he taught criminology at the University of Edinburgh before being appointed the Arthur T. Vanderbilt Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology at New York University. With interests in crime and punishment, Garland is particularly noted for his examination of the political and cultural context of the death penalty in USA. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and holds an honorary degree from the Free University of Brussels (2009).
