Brian Miller

1934 - 2011

Artist and playwright. Born in Riddrie (Glasgow), Miller was brought up in Glasgow and Birmingham but completed his education at Whitehill Secondary School. He became an apprentice at a Glasgow engineering company and quickly progressed from armature winder to draughtsman. He went on to become a technical illustrator for Rolls Royce while attending an evening class at the Glasgow School of Art. He exhibited regularly at the weekends on the railings outside Glasgow Botanic Garden. However Miller is best known for his twenty-eight years as the first and only Town Artist employed by the Cumbernauld Development Corporation, the first full-time artist within the British New Town system. He found Cumbernauld a blank canvas where he was able to create murals and sculptures in his own unique form of abstract expressionism, as well as designing logos, signage and exhibitions to promote the town to inward investors. Miller was also a founder of Cumbernauld Theatre and wrote many plays which were performed there. He appeared on a Channel 4 documentary on the town and was noted for his unparalleled knowledge of its history. He died at Strathcarron Hospice and his funeral service was held at Falkirk Crematorium.
