John Neilson


1779 - 1855

Industrialist. Born in Glasgow into a family of iron-masters, he was the elder brother of James Beaumont Neilson (1792 - 1865) who had invented the hot-blast furnace. He trained in his father's Govan Ironworks but when on to establish the Oakbank Foundry in Glasgow, which built the Fairy Queen, the first iron ship built on the Clyde. He also established the Summerlee Iron Works in Coatbridge (1836). He died in Glasgow.
