James McCosh


1811 - 1894

Philosopher. Born at Carskeoch near Patna (East Ayrshire) and educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. McCosh served as a minister in the Church of Scotland at Arbroath and Brechin, but joined the Free Church following the Disruption of 1843. He became Professor of Logic at Belfast (1851) and then President of Princeton University (New Jersey) in 1868. He was a supporter of the Scottish School of Philosophy, and the work of Thomas Reid (1710-96) and Dugald Stewart (1753 - 1828).
