An Irish monk who was the son of a King of Dalriada. Although little is known of his life, Cathan is associated with placenames in Antrim and in the West of Scotland. He is particularly connected to Kilchattan Bay in Bute, where he is thought to have lived and is linked to the foundation of a monastery which was developed by his nephew St. Blane, now known as St. Blane's Chapel. Cathan is thought to have tutored Blane and ordained him as a priest. There is a St. Catan's Chapel and Well on Gigha, Kilchattan Church on Luing, a chapel at Lower Kilchattan on Colonsay and a further Kilchattan in Kintyre.
His servant Gillichattan Mor may have given rise to Clan Chattan.
