Lewis Capaldi

1996 -

Singer-songwriter. Born in Glasgow, a second-cousin-once-removed of actor Peter Capaldi (b.1958), he was raised in Whitburn (West Lothian) and educated at St. Kentigern's Academy in Blackburn. He began singing professionally in local bars but suddenly came to prominence after releasing tracks on the internet; his single Bruises (2017) quickly gained more than 25 million plays on Spotify worldwide, making him the fastest ever unsigned artist to reach that number. He was soon signed up by the Universal Music Group. He went on to successes; in 2018 he performed at several music festivals and began touring for the first time, and then in 2019 his single Someone You Loved reached Number One in the UK Singles Chart remaining there for seven consecutive weeks. This track went on to become Number One in the USA, making Capaldi the first Scottish solo artist to reach this height since Sheena Easton in 1981. Further UK No.1 hits have included Before You Go (2019) and Capaldi was named Best New Artist in the Brit Awards of 2020.
