Prof. William Traill


1746 - 1831

Mathematician. Born in Montrose (Angus), the son of a clergyman, Traill was educated at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1766. Thereafter he was appointed to the Chair of Mathematics at Marischal College, Aberdeen. He published a popular book Elements of Algebra (1770) and was a founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1783. He moved to Northern Ireland in 1779, entering the church there, but retired to Bath (England) with his wife c.1821.
