Industrialist and merchant. Binning became a partner in Rumford Street Chemical Works in Glasgow, owned by George Miller, which distilled coal-tar and produced a range of useful chemicals. He married Miller's daughter Jane. He went on to become a partner in Sandilands Chemical Works in Aberdeen, which was owned by Miller's brother. He went on to open his own Blochairn Chemical Works c.1864 and an oil shale works at Clippen in Renfrewshire. He contributed financially to the building of Kelvinside Free Church, He died at his home in Dowanhill and lies buried in Glasgow Necropolis. His son was the diplomat Sir Arthur William Binning.
