Frances Shand Kydd

(Frances Roche, Viscountess Althorp)

1936 - 2004

Nobility. Born on the Royal Sandringham Estate, the daughter of Maurice Roche, 4th Baron Fermoy, who was a close friend of King George VI and his wife Ruth (1908-93), who became Lady-in-Waiting to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. She was to marry John Spencer, Viscount Althorp, and their most notable child became Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-97). This was an unhappy marriage and she left him and her children. In 1969, she married Peter Shand Kydd, the son of an Australian wall-paper magnate. The couple bought Ardencaple House on Seil island in Argyll & Bute. Her relationship with the children of her first marriage was awkward. She died at Ardencaple, and was buried at Pennyfuir Cemetery following a funeral at St. Columba's Cathedral in Oban.
