Timothy (Tim) Chalk

1955 -

Artist and sculptor. Born in Hillhead (Glasgow), the son of a lecturer at the University of Glasgow, Chalk studied in Edinburgh, with his course split between drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art and art history at the University of Edinburgh. Between 1979 and 1981, Chalk worked with the Theatre Workshop Community Arts Centre in Edinburgh, creating his first mural for the community centre in Pilton in collaboration with fellow art college student Paul Grime (b.1956). Chalk founded Artist's Collective with Grime and David Wilkinson in 1981. Chalk and Grime worked together as Street Artworks (1984-88) and then as Chalk & Grime (1988-94). Together they created community art and street murals, including the unusual Oscar Romero Plaque in Edinburgh.

Chalk went on to specialise in relief and three-dimensional sculpture from his workshop based in Duddingston village in Edinburgh, where several of his public artworks can be seen. He has taken inspiration from the poems of Robert Burns (1759-86) and books of Neil Gunn (1891 - 1973). Other works include a 1999 commission from the Post Office for a series of stamps to mark the inauguration of the Scottish Parliament and a sculpture trail in the grounds of Doune Castle, individual sculptures for Iona Abbey, the Riverside Museum in Glasgow and the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Ayrshire.
