Marilyn Imrie


1947 - 2020

Radio producer and theatre director. Born in Markinch (Fife), Imrie was educated at Buckhaven High School and the University of Leicester, followed by teacher training at Jordanhill College in Glasgow. She combined teaching with folk singing, but was soon involved in theatre working with the likes of John Byrne (b. 1940), Billy Connolly (b. 1942) and Bill Paterson (b. 1945). She produced educational programmes for BBC Scotland, but went on to work for BBC Radio 4 where she became known for a range of plays including an adaption of Rumpole of the Bailey, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, and a remarkable series of twenty-three episodes of Stanley Baxter Playhouse. Imrie was named as one of the Saltire Society's first Outstanding Women of Scotland in 2015. She died in Edinburgh.
