Peter Fleming


1907 - 1971

Travel writer and soldier. Born in London, he was the older brother of author Ian Fleming (1908-64) and the son of a Scottish-born Member of Parliament, Valentine Fleming (1882 - 1917), who was killed during the First World War. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. As a correspondent for The Times newspaper, he travelled to Brazil (1932) and through Central Asia (1934-35). During the Second World War he was involved in 'irregular warfare', setting up commando units and military deception. He was honoured b both Britain and China for his war service. He went on to serve as a Deputy Lieutenant for Oxfordshire, where he made his home. He also spent time on his family's Black Mount estate in Argyll & Bute, where he died while deer stalking. He is remembered by a monument on Meall Mor, to the west of the A82 Trunk Road.
