John Thomson


1909 - 1931

Football player. Born in Kirkcaldy, Thomson lived at Bowhill, Cardenden (Fife). He served as goal-keeper for the Glasgow team Celtic from 1926 until his death, and also had a distinguished international career.

Thomson died as a result of injuries accidentally received during a football game against his team's great rivals, Rangers, at Ibrox Park (Glasgow). The incident was captured by British Movietone newsreel cameras. He was only 22 years of age. Such was his fame that tens of thousands of people attended his funeral at Bowhill, where he lies buried.
