Evangelist and writer. Born the son of a grocer in Irvine (North Ayrshire), Dickie was orphaned at the age of fifteen. He studied at the University of Glasgow but his career was limited by his tuberculosis, which he had been told would lead to an early death. Between periods of recuperation cared for by his sister in Irvine, Dickie taught in Cairnryan and became an evangelical missionary in Irvine and then, from 1858, in Kilmarnock. In 1878 he returned to live with his siister in Irvine once again due to his health. He died there and lies buried in Irvine Churchyard. He is remembered for his letters, religious tracts, hymns and books, with one of Kilmarnock's principal streets was named in his honour.
