John Higgins


1975 -

Snooker player. Higgins lives in Wishaw (North Lanarkshire). He turned professional in 1992, but suddenly came to prominence during the 1994/5 season, earning a staggering £283,970 in that year, while still a teenager. His most successful season was 1998-99, when he rose to No.1 in the world rankings, having won the German and British Opens as well as the Embassy World Championship. He went on to win the British Open in 2001 and 2004, but spectacularly returned to the top when he took a second World Championship in 2007, another in 2009 and a fourth in 2011. He was still ranked fifth best player in the world in 2022 and is regarded as one of the top-three players in the history of the sport. Higgins was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list of 2008.
