David Talbot Rice

1903 - 1972

Academic. Brought up in Gloucestershire (England) and educated at Eton and Christ Church College, Oxford. Appointed to the Watson Gordon Chair of Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh (1934), which he held until his death, except for a period of absence during World War II, when he headed the Near East section of British Intelligence. His specialism was Byzantine and Islamic art, and he worked hard to establish an arts centre in the University, which was posthumously named after him.
