Sir William George Gillies (W. G. Gillies) 1898 - 1973 Artist. Born in Haddington, he lived in Temple (Midlothian) for most of his life. Gillies was a prolific painter of both landscapes and still-life in oil and watercolour. He was a friend and contemporary of William Johnstone (1897 - 1981). He taught at Edinburgh College of Art, where he himself studied, and became its Head of Painting (1946) and Principal (1959). He was knighted (1970). A prolific artist, his paintings are held by many galleries, including the National Gallery of Scotland, the Royal Scottish Academy, the City Art Centre in Edinburgh, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Kirkcaldy Museum and Art Gallery, the McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock and the Paisley Museum and Art Galleries. Several of his works were part of the Hope Scott gift to the Talbot Rice Gallery in the University of Edinburgh. He died in Temple.
