(7th Earl of Hopetoun; 1st Marquis of Linlithgow) 1860 - 1908
Politician. Born at Hopetoun House (near South Queensferry) and educated at Eton. He was the first Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia (1900-2) and was created Marquis of Linlithgow (1902). Hope served as Secretary of State for Scotland in the first administration of Arthur Balfour (1848 - 1930). He sold the area which became the Rosyth naval dockyard to the Government. He died in France but is remembered by a bronze statue in Linlithgow, known as the 'Green Man' and a further equestrian statue in Melbourne (Australia).
