Victor Alexander John Hope

(8th Earl of Hopetoun; 2nd Marquis of Linlithgow)

1887 - 1952

Viceroy of India. Born at Hopetoun House (near South Queensferry) and educated at Eton. Hope succeeded to the Marquessate of Linlithgow following the death of his father in 1908. He led a battalion of the Royal Scots on the Western Front during the First World War. Serving as Viceroy and Governor-General of India (1936-43), he was initially regarded as a safe pair of hands, promoting a greater level of Indian democratisation and ensuring support for the war effort during the early part of World War II. However, his actions brought a campaign of civil disobedience in 1942 and encouraged religious polarisation, which eventually gave rise to Partition. Hope served as Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh (1944 - 1952).
