George Hay


(8th Marquess of Tweeddale)

1787 - 1876

Soldier. Born at Bonnington. Hay succeeded his father, who had been imprisoned in France by Napoleon until his death, to the Marquisate of Tweeddale in 1804. He married Susan, daughter of the 5th Duke of Manchester (1816) and fathered both the 9th and 10th Marquesses. Professionally, Hay rose to rank of Field Marshall in the army (1875) and was Governor of Madras in India (1842-48).

He retired to Yester, where he died and is buried.
