Hugh Montgomerie of Coilsfield

(12th Earl of Eglinton)

1739 - 1819

Politician and soldier. Following a successful military career, Montgomerie served as Member of Parliament for Ayrshire on three occasions. In 1796, he succeeded his cousin to become 12th Earl of Eglinton.

Eglinton continued a programme of improvements on the family estates in Ayrshire and commissioned the architect John Paterson to build Eglinton Castle. Relations between the two deteriorated to the point that Paterson took extended legal action against Eglinton for the recovery of fees. His ambitious projects, which added significantly to the family debt, included Ardrossan Harbour and the Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal.
