Alexander Mackenzie


1822 - 1892

Canadian Prime Minister. Born at Logierait (Perthshire), Mackenzie was brought up in Dunkeld. He emigrated for Canada in 1842 where he was a mason and contractor in Kingston, Ontario. Engaging in politics, he led the Liberal opposition in the Dominion parliament from 1867, opposing the Conservative administration of Sir John Macdonald, another Scotsman. Mackenzie became the second Prime Minister of Canada between 1873 and 1878. Thereafter, he remained in parliament until his death.

He last visited Scotland in 1875.
