Politician and brewer. Born in Alloa, the nephew of brewer William McEwan (1827 - 1913). He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and briefly attended the University of Edinburgh, but left to run the family brewing firm on the death of his father. Beginning his political career in local government in his native Clackmannanshire, he went on to become the Member of Parliament for Ayr (1906-22). He became Chairman of the Conservative Party in 1916, and ran the election campaigns in 1918 and 1922, the latter won by his party led by Andrew Bonar-Law (1858 - 1923). Younger was created a baronet in 1911 and advanced to become Viscount Younger of Leckie in 1923. He had bought the Leckie Estate in Stirlingshire in 1906.
