Hitler's Deputy lands in Scotland

1941

Hitler's Deputy Rudolf Hess parachutes from a plane just south of Glasgow. His purpose remains one of the great enigmas of the war, but it has been suggested he was heading for the Duke of Hamilton's residence at Dungavel with the intention of negotiating peace with Britain. Hess was taken prisoner, tried at Nuremberg at the end of the war and spent the rest of his life in Spandau Prison in Berlin.
