Located 4 miles (6 km) northeast of Banchory, Corrichie Battlefield lies around the southeast slopes of the Hill of Fare, 3 miles (5 km) to the southwest of Echt. On 28th October 1562, the army of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87), led by James Stuart, Earl of Moray (1531-70), met a much smaller force led by George Gordon, 4th Earl of Huntly (1514-62). Huntly's force was routed and he was killed. Mary herself is said to have watched the battle from the Queen's Chair, a granite crag on Berry Hill, which overlooked the battlefield.
The battle is commemorated by a 3.6m (12-foot) granite pillar erected by the Deeside Field Club in 1951, on the north side of the B977 road, a mile (1.5 km) north of Hirn.
