Located above the hamlet of Pitcur (Perth and Kinross), 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Dundee in the Sidlaw Hills, Pitcur Castle is a ruined L-plan tower house. Built in the 16th C., the four-storey castle later gained a new wing to make it T-plan. Still largely complete, the entrance retains its iron yett, the vaulted basement was once the location of the kitchens and the great hall was located on the first floor with bedchambers above.
The castle was held by the Chisholm family in 1315, but passed to the Hallyburton family in 1432. In 1680, the family moved to the new Hallyburton House, which lies a mile (1.5 km) to the north. The estate was sold to Graham Menzies, an Edinburgh distiller, in 1880.
