Dysart Parish Church

Located in the West Port of Dysart, the Parish Church was built 1872-4 for the Free Church of Scotland, much later becoming the property of the established church. It was a copy of the 14th century St. Monans parish Church. A rare Charles Rennie Mackintosh mural was discovered under later paint-work in 2004. The mural, which is of national importance, comprises a series of large stencilled panels in the apse of the church. Mackintosh had been commissioned to paint the work for only £10, in 1901 but it was later painted over in an attempt to 'modernise' the church. Despite this the mural is in good condition, with its colours remaining bright, and is undergoing restoration.
