Chliostair Hydro-Electric Scheme

A small hydro-electric power scheme on North Harris in the Outer Hebrides, the Chliostair power station is located 1¼ miles (2 km) northeast of Amhuinnsuidhe. It has a generation capacity of 1 megawatt making use of a gross head of water of 125m (410 feet) from Loch Chliostair reservoir, located a half-mile (1 km) to the northeast, to produce an average of 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Commissioned in 1960 to supply electricity to the isolated island community, the scheme has subsequently become an integral part of the national electricity supply network.
