The remains of a Bronze Age village on the machair of South Uist, Cladh Hallan is located 1¼ miles (2 km) west northwest of Daliburgh. Here archaeological excavations between 1989 and 2002 uncovered the remains of a settlement from around 1000 BC. Scientists from the University of Sheffield discovered a rich assemblage of artefacts, including tools, jewellery and pottery, with a cooking-pot retaining evidence of milk protein. Uniquely, one house contained two human burials where the bodies appear to have been mummified. These represented the first mummified remains ever to be found in Britain. Investigation revealed that the bodies seem to have been preserved by placing them in the acid environment of a peat bog for a short period of time, before being retained perhaps as objects of veneration.
