Sands of Luce

(Luce Sands)

An extensive beach and dune system at the head of Luce Bay in the west of Dumfries and Galloway, Luce Sands extends for 7 miles (11 km) from Sandhead in the west to Stairhaven in the east. Luce Bay and Sands were designated a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in 2005 because of its dune and seashore habitats, providing an important roost and feeding ground for over-wintering birds and a habitat for rare great crested newts. Much of the Sands and Bay represents a Ministry of Defence training area and firing range, centred on the former airfield at MOD West Freugh.
