Woodside

A residential district of central Glasgow, Woodside is bounded by the M8 motorway to the south, Great Western Road and the River Kelvin to the west, and the Glasgow Branch of the Forth and Clyde Canal to the north and east. The area is divided by Maryhill Road and Garscube Road. From the 1820s, sizeable villas and terraced properties were built to accommodate affluent residents, good-quality tenements followed for the middle classes, and also factories to the north and east which brought the need for social housing. Woodside was designated as the last of Glasgow's Comprehensive Redevelopment Area in 1964 and this saw many of the original houses (good and bad) and old factories levelled to be redeveloped as modern housing. Notable buildings include North Woodside Leisure Centre (which began as Woodside Baths and Wash House in 1882), Woodside Library (1905), the Methodist Central Halls (1925) and several fine churches. The Phoenix Flowers, which lie alongside Garscube Road as it passes beneath the M8 motorway, are a reminder of Phoenix Park, which was swept away with the building of the motorway in the early 1970s. The district of Woodlands lies to the southwest, on the opposite side of Great Western Road.
