A large cemetery on a gentle slope rising from the flood plain of the Allan Water, a half-mile (1 km) north of the village of Dunblane, the Dunblane Cemetery opened in 1914. In a new section at its rear, centred around a fountain, are a sad semicircle of memorial stones. These mark the graves of twelve of the sixteen young children who were massacred by a crazed gunman in Dunblane Primary School on the 13th March 1996, together with their teacher, Gwen Mayor, who died with them. A Memorial Garden, dedicated in 1998, was funded by public donations from around the world. This includes a bear-and-wolf sculpture, commemorative plaque and distinctive dry-stone walls designed by stone artist David Wilson.
Hotel entrepreneur Sir Reo Stakis (1913 - 2001) is also buried here.
