Kirkcaldy Crematorium

Kirkcaldy Crematorium is discreetly located amongst woodland on part of the former Dunnikier Estate, 1¼ miles (2 km) north of the town centre. It was built to the designs of London-based architect Hugh Neville Conder, who won a competition organised by Kirkcaldy Town Council, and opened in 1959 to provide cremation services for Central, South and East Fife. Now run by Fife Council, 1810 cremations were performed in 2009. The building is of red sandstone, with a substantial tower which hides the chimney. A sizeable chapel with a high curved roof features large windows along the north side which look out onto an enclosed ornamental garden. The building is surrounded by extensive lawn gardens. The Gardens of Remembrance are divided into four sections which, in a sequence according to the time of the year, are used for scattering of ashes. Beds of roses and azaleas are laid throughout. A memorial wall with granite plaques is located near to the entrance to the gardens, whilst small granite commemorative kerbs line the pathways within the gardens. Darts champion Jocky Wilson was cremated here following his death in 2012.
