Harlaw Reservoir

A small reservoir in the Pentland Hills, Harlaw reservoir lies in front of the larger Threipmuir Reservoir, 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Balerno and 7½ miles (12 km) southwest of Edinburgh. It was built 1843-48 for the Edinburgh Water Company by their engineer James Jardine (1776 - 1858), extends to 94.8 ha (234 acres) and is impounded by an earth embankment dam, 21.3m (70 feet) in height and 157m (515 feet) long. The reservoir contains 727 million litres (160 million gallons) of water. While no longer involved in public water supply. the Harlaw and Threipmuir reservoirs provide essential upstream flood storage to prevent flooding of the Water of Leith. The reservoir was sold by Scottish Water to the City of Edinburgh Council in 2006. Harlaw is regularly stocked with rainbow trout to support a popular recreational fishery which is owned by the Malleny Estate and leased to the Malleny Angling Association.
