Duart Castle

A Maclean stronghold on the island of Mull, Duart Castle overlooks the Sound of Mull, 2 miles (3 km) southeast of Craignure. Built to guard the entrance to the Sound in the 13th century, it was destroyed during the Jacobite Rising and lay in ruins until it was restored in the early 20th century. The castle has displays on the ship The Swan, Oliver Cromwell's flagship which sank nearby in 1653. Duart Castle, the seat of the Chiefs of the Clan Maclean, has featured in a number of films including Alistair MacLean's When Eight Bells Toll (1971) and Entrapment (2000), starring Sean Connery.
