Originally erected in 1628 by John Erskine, Earl of Mar (1558 - 1634), to repel the neighbouring Farquharsons, Braemar Castle is situated on the north side of Braemar in Aberdeenshire. It was eventually acquired by the Farquharsons in 1732 and leased to the Government which restored and altered the tower in preparation for use as a garrison. These alterations were undertaken by the famous architect John Adam (1721-92). Now open to the public, the castle has exhibits of military relics, flags and standards, together with Farquharson memorabilia.
