Asgog Castle

(Asgog Loch Castle)

The fragmentary remains of a fortification on the western shore of Asgog Loch in the SW of the Cowal peninsula of Argyll & Bute, Asgog Castle is located a half-mile (1 km) west of Millhouse. It once comprised a square keep and courtyard, dating from the early 15th century. The basement was vaulted and there were at least two storeys above. Today, only the west wall remains to anything approaching its original height. It was a stronghold of the Lamonts of Ascog until destroyed by Archibald Campbell, Marquis of Argyll (1598 - 1661), after a siege in 1646. The Lamonts had been raiding Campbell lands but were promised they could go free if they stopped and surrendered their castle. However, Argyll reneged on this promise and slaughtered them all, including women and children.
