St. Aloysius RC Church, Garnethill

Located in the Garnethill district of Glasgow, St. Aloysius' Roman Catholic Church lies on Rose Street, a half-mile (1 km) northwest of Queen Street Station. Run by the Jesuit Order, the church was built 1908-10 in the Italian-Renaissance style by the Belgian architect Charles Menart (c. 1876 - 1938), who had already been responsible for other churches in Scotland. Externally of red sandstone ashlar, the interior is large and bright, with a barrel-vaulted nave constructed in reinforced concrete. The sumptuous decoration is the work of Austrian architect Ernest Schaufelberg (1892 - 1970) and comprises coloured marble and bright mosaics, making St. Aloysius one of the most magnificent churches in the city. Begun in 1927, this decorative scheme proved enormously costly and was never completed. The High Altar is based on the shrine of St. Aloysius in San Ignazio in Rome. There is fine stained glass dating from 1927-38.

The church has close associations with the nearby St. Aloysius' College.
