An industrial site lying 1¼ miles (2 km) northeast of Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, industrial activity began at Edingham in 1939 when a factory to make the explosive cordite was built by the Ministry of Supply and run by ICI Nobel. At its peak it employed 2200 people, most of them women. Cordite was necessary for bullets and shells during World War II. The factory continued as a Royal Navy Armaments Depot until 1960. In 1963 the part of the site was developed as an industrial estate, the principal plant being a central-heating radiator factory, which eventually closed in 1999 with the loss of 160 jobs.
The remaining wartime buildings are listed by Historic Environment Scotland due to their historical importance.
