Witness Cairn, Isle of Whithorn

Situated on the seafront at Isle of Whithorn, the Witness Cairn was inaugurated on 11th May 1997 to commemorate the arrival of the Christian missionary St Ninian to these shores in 397 AD. Visitors are invited to add their own stones to the cairn, which has thus taken on the appearance of a pile of rocks, with a slab of granite providing explanation. The cairn is an initiative of the ecumenical fora, Glasgow Churches Together (GCT) and Action of Churches Together in Scotland (ACTS). It is located in the remains of a building which was the Isle of Whithorn Lifeboat Station between 1869 and 1920.
