Millennium Bridge, Glasgow

The lower of two bridges which connect the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) with Pacific Quay, the Millennium Bridge was completed in 2002 as part of the Glasgow Science Centre development. With a total length of 128m (420 feet), the bridge comprises five spans of a tubular steel framework infilled with a sheet-steel walkway and sides. The middle span splits into two bascules which can be lifted by radio-controlled hydraulic cylinders to allow river traffic to pass. The project was funded by the Millennium Commission and the engineers were Rotherham-based M.G. Bennett Associates Ltd. and piling was by C. Spencer Ltd. of Lincolnshire.
